How the show works

Holos Krainy follows the international Voice format, created within the format developed by Dutch television producer John de Mol Jr., which began as The Voice of Holland. Ukraine’s version was an early adaptation, following the American version.

Blind auditions open the show. A coach hears the voice without seeing the singer, and turns a chair only for a voice that earns a place on the team. The format tests the voice alone, and it gives singers who might not fit a usual television look a fair hearing.

Battle rounds pair team members against each other, and the knockout stage, introduced as Super Battles in season 3, changed the middle of the show again. Singers perform, coaches choose, and the field narrows. In the live shows, the decision shifts increasingly to viewers, and the final winner is decided by public vote.

There is also a children’s version, Holos Dity, which is a separate competition with its own winners. It is not part of the list above, and its seasons should not be mixed with the main show.

How the show changed

The opening and the ending stayed steady across thirteen seasons, while the middle rounds kept changing. Season 6 introduced a chair system in the knockouts, which made that stage more open about who stayed and who left.

Season 7 increased team sizes to sixteen singers per coach and made other changes to the battles. Season 9 introduced a block in the blind auditions, letting each coach block one rival coach once. Season 11 removed that block, returning the blind auditions to a simpler form.

Season 10 introduced a new steal in the knockout stage, allowing a mentor to take a singer dropped by another coach. Season 12 introduced a Second Chance stage, known in Ukrainian as Druhyi Shans, which gave singers a different route to the final. Season 13 removed the Second Chance coaches, reduced team sizes to ten, and replaced knockouts with cross-battles.

The coaches who kept winning

Coaching success is concentrated but not closed off. Tina Karol leads with three wins, in seasons 5, 7 and 10. Diana Arbenina and Svyatoslav Vakarchuk have two wins each. Oleksandr Ponomaryov, Serhii Babkin, Dan Balan, DOROFEEVA, the duo of Oleksandra Zaritska and Andriy Matsola, and Artem Pyvovarov each have one win. Across thirteen completed seasons, that is nine different winning coaches or coaching combinations.

Karol’s record stands out because her wins came in three different eras of the show, under different rules and against different panels. Arbenina’s two wins came back to back, in the first two seasons, when the show was still finding its shape. Vakarchuk’s two wins came in seasons 4 and 6, with a gap in between. Each pattern tells a different story about what coaching meant at the time.

Editor’s take: the list makes a coach’s job look easy, and it is not. A winning coach has to pick voices that can survive battles, knockouts and live shows, and then keep those singers steady in front of a voting public. Karol did that three times, which is why her name keeps coming up whenever the show’s history is discussed.

The seasons that broke the pattern

Season 12 is unlike any other season in the list. It began on 23 January 2022, stopped after only six episodes, and returned on 2 October 2022 on TET, before ending on 20 November 2022. Mariya Kvitka won from the Second Chance team, the first and only winner to come through that route.

Season 13, known as the European Season, was the first season in the whole international Voice family to be staged in Poland, and it used a different production setup from the earlier seasons in Kyiv. Its coaches were Ivan Klymenko, Nadia Dorofeeva, Artem Pyvovarov and Julia Sanina, and its hosts were Yuriy Horbunov and Kateryna Osadcha. Pyvovarov won in his first season as a coach, with Mykhailo Panchyshyn, and the runner-up was Yuriy Horodetskyy.

Season 4 also sits in a different context, airing in spring 2014, a period of major change in Ukraine. The show went ahead, and Hrokhotskyy’s win under Vakarchuk became part of a season that viewers remembered for reasons beyond the singing.

Where to start

New viewers do best starting with the season 12 final, where Mariya Kvitka’s win from the Second Chance team makes the most sense once the interrupted season is understood. Next comes season 9, where Oksana Mukha’s win under Dan Balan is the most often replayed of the late 2010s, for a voice that sounded fully formed from the first note. Season 5 rounds out the set, with Anton Kopityn’s win under Tina Karol; it is the cleanest example of the show’s early format, before the later rounds were reshaped, and it shows why Karol became the show’s most successful coach.
